Both Gen-X women and men under the age of 41 rank flexibility as one of the top 10 factors affecting their decision to remain with an employer. Even junior associates, recent law school graduates and the youngest Gen Y-ers who may not have entered the workforce yet, are thinking differently about how they want to live their lives. According to a study of high school students conducted by the Families and Work Institute, 59 percent of high school boys say they would want to reduce their work hours when they have children. Helena's Story

Between 1979 and 1995, I tried to make the practice of law work for me on three different continents, in different-sized law firms, but I still felt as if I were in jail doing a life sentence. I made a lot of money, but I spent a lot of money too -- to compensate for the fact I never had enough time to relax and catch up with myself. I was burned out and miserable, but I kept going because I didn't know for sure there was another path.
